Mandy Abson Obituary

Mother Mandy Baker Abson was born October 15, 1928 in Strong, AR to the late Mr. Thomas “Tom” Baker and Mrs. Lillie Newton Baker.

On Saturday, November 12, 2022, in Strong, AR, Mother Mandy told her son, Willie Vell, she was tired. Willie Vell picked his mother up from her walker and tucked her in bed.  She then closed her eyes in death to be with the Lord.

Grandma or Aunt Mandy, as she was affectionately known by many, was married to the late L.V. “Uncle Ab” Abson.  To this union, they were blessed to raise and love three children; Ida Mae, Willie Vell, and Annie B.

Grandma received her education from Gardner High School where she played basketball.  After completing school, she worked various jobs before being hired at ConAgra.  While working at ConAgra, she was elected and acted for many years as Union Steward for United Food & Commercial Workers International Union, Local 425.  Grandma was a long-standing member of Springhill Baptist Church in Oakland, LA where she served as an usher.  She was a member of the Gardner High School Alumni Association, and a member of the Order of Eastern Star – Gardner Chapter #421.

Grandma loved attending Noon Day Bible Study at Immanuel Baptist Church in El Dorado, AR on Wednesdays.  She also loved playing cards and games on her computer, garage sales, word search book, and watching her favorite basketball team, the San Antonio Spurs.

Grandma was preceded in death by her husband, L.V. Abson; daughter Annie B. Abson Booker; granddaughter, Kathy Thompson; two great grandsons, Marquavis Neal and Elijah Harris; parents, Thomas and Lillie Baker; nine siblings, Mary Lou, John Thomas “Jack”, Oceola, Raymond “Lil Boy”, Ira “Smokey”, Lottie Mae “Lot”, X.L. “Bake”, Gussie, and Nettie.
To cherish Grandma memories are: son, Willie Vell (Alice) Abson of Mabelvale, AR; daughter, Ida Mae Carter of Monroe, LA; eight grandchildren, Catrica Neal of Fairburn, GA, Terri Thompson of Bloomington, IL; Ardis (Takia) Thompson Jr. of Bloomington, IL; Melanie Wainwright of Monroe, LA; Oteia Abson of Houston, TX; Sabrina Robinson of Fairburn, GA; Shunta Carter of Monroe, LA and Alison (Robert) Abson-Greer of El Dorado, AR; one sister, Ethel Lee Kemp of Strong, AR; two special children, Herbert (Essie) Baker of Spearsville, LA, Juanita (Eddie) Rogers of Strong, AR; two special grandchildren, Gillian(Jonavan) Barnes of Decatur, GA and Charria Perry of Strong, AR; her friend, Margaret (Otis) Gatson of Pine Bluff, AR; 13 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, and a host of godchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
