John Hardy (Nookie) Powell was born on January 28, 1948 to the late Bernice and Cast Powell and a special mother Ellen Fountain.
John accepted Christ and was baptized at First Zion Baptist Church in Winnsboro, LA. He later became a member of Seven Star M.B.C. under the leadership of Rev. Henry Harris where he remained faithful. He served on the deacon board and the male choir.
John was employed and retired at the Union Pacific Railroad. He later moved to Arkansas where he worked for the Arkansas Department of Correction and McGehee School District as a food service director. He also served 2 years in the Marine Corps where he fought for our country in the Vietnam War before he was wounded.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernice and Cast Powell; two brothers, Wilbert Wade and Cast Powell, Jr. and one sister, Ruby Lee Simpson.
He leaves to cherish his memories: His loving wife, Claudine Powell of McGehee, AR; He was blessed with 12 children: Seven daughters, Iris Dixon (MI), Shawanna Powell (LA), La'Toya Powell (AR), Regina Williams (NE), Jasmine Powell (AR), Angel Powell (AR) and Kimberly Davis (AR); Five sons, Dennis Fontenot (Pat) of FL, Derrick Kerry (Nanie)of LA, John Powell, Jr. (OK), Charles Baker(AR), and Jeremy Campbell (Juanita) of AR; Four sisters, Linda Powell, Hattie Burkhatter (Booker), Eliza Addison and Pearlie Whitten; Five brothers, Leonard Wade, Henry Davis (Katie), Freeman Addison (Marilyn), Sammie White(Jessie), and John Wayne Addison(Felicia).
Twenty-six grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and love ones.
Funeral Service will be held Saturday, August 27, 2016 at the Bailey Chapel M.B.C. in Tillar, AR at 12:00 p.m. Visitation will be held Friday, August 26, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Seven Star Baptist Church in Tillar, AR, and 10 until service time at the Bailey Chapel Church on Saturday.
Burial will follow in the Seven Star Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of Mitchell Memorial Funeral Service of Crossett, AR
